Hello ,
Welcome to the October edition of our pilot volunteer opportunity board! We are striving to match people who want to volunteer with environmental organizations that are seeking volunteers. The postings are from Ontario Nature and the 150 member groups that form our Nature Network.
You can see past posting lists on our volunteer webpage.
Now that we are a few months into this pilot, we are seeking feedback on how it has been going. If you have any comments or suggestions please email them to naturenetwork@ontarionature.org.
VOLUNTEER BOARD POSTINGS
Digitise ON Nature Magazine Back Issues, Ontario Nature's Communications Team
- Location: 720 Bathurst Street, Toronto
- Start: November 13th
- Duration: 4 months
- Time Commitment: Flexible, maybe 2 hours per week
- Contact: John Hassell, johnh@ontarionature.org
Help us digitise back issues of ON Nature magazine, starting with 1969 and then previous years. The volunteer would scan hard copies of the magazines at Ontario Nature’s office at the Centre for Social Innovation, compile the PDFs, add them to our digital magazine software (Publitas) and save the final PDF to the cloud. For those with the relevant skillsets, we’d love support on the next steps of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and creating Table of Contents webpages (WordPress).
Photography Donations, Ontario Nature's Communications Team
Location: Virtual Start: October 14th Duration: 3 months Time Commitment: Flexible Contact: Noah Cole, noahc@ontarionature.org
Are you a keen nature photographer? Ontario Nature is looking to expand our collection of photos. We are looking for wildlife (especially plants, insects, mammals, breeding birds and aquatic species), landscapes and people doing nature-based activities. Please send and initial selection of up to 15 images labelled with the subject and photographer name. Before submitting, please read our photo guidelines. To submit, select your preferred way, transfer your photos, then email Noah to let him know. We always credit photographers and never share photos. We will follow-up with some photographers requesting more photos.
Board Minute-Taker, Toronto Field Naturalists
- Location: Toronto
- Start: November 3rd
- Duration: Ongoing
- Time Commitment: 3 hours per month, September – May

- What’s involved: We meet by Zoom, usually the first Sunday of the month at 5:00 p.m. An established template and format eases minute-taking. The meetings are also recorded as a video, so the minute-taker can refer to it as needed. We aim to circulate draft minutes to the board within a week after each board meeting.
- Skills needed:
- Good listener
- Detail oriented
- At ease writing, editing and sharing Word documents
- Able to attend board meetings on the first Sunday of the month at 5:00 p.m.
Get the inside story on how a non-profit environmental board operates. TFN’s board meets to discuss projects and priorities. Our minutes are vital records, keeping us on track, and reminding us of decisions taken and work ahead.
Environmental Property Monitor, Haliburton Highlands Land Trust
We monitor all Haliburton Highlands Land Trust properties. As a property monitor, you would volunteer to walk various sections of the trail and complete a checklist of your observations. You could also help walk the boundary of a property to ensure no trespassing or other prohibited activities have taken place.
FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES
Looking for other ways to get involved with Ontario Nature and the nature community?
If you know anyone who wants to sign up for this email list, they can do so on our volunteer webpage.
If you are a member group and have an opportunity, please fill out this form to have it included in the next newsletter. Postings must be submitted by the 25th of the month for inclusion in the subsequent month’s newsletter (e.g., Postings in by October 25 for early November distribution). Groups are responsible for vetting, training and the safety of volunteers.
Sincerely,
