Hello ,

Welcome to the June volunteer opportunity board! We are striving to match people who want to volunteer with environmental organizations that are seeking volunteers. The postings are from Ontario Nature and the 150 member groups that form our Nature Network.

You can see past posting lists on our volunteer webpage.

The volunteer newsletter has graduated from a one-year pilot, and we plan to keep it going! We welcome feedback. If you have any comments or suggestions, please email them to naturenetwork@ontarionature.org.

VOLUNTEER BOARD POSTINGS

Piping Plover Nest Monitors, Birds Canada

  • Location: Wasaga Beach (Wasaga Beach Provincial Park), Durham Region (Darlington Provincial Park), and Northumberland (Presqu'ile Provincial Park)
  • Start: May 15 2025 or later
  • Duration: Ongoing, until mid-late August
  • Time Commitment: Variable
  • Contact: Sydney Shepherd, ontarioplovers@birdscanada.org

Are you looking to try something new this summer? The Ontario Piping Plover Conservation Program is recruiting volunteers to monitor piping plover nests and conduct outreach on busy beaches!

Nest monitoring is a great way to prepare for a career in the environmental field. You'll meet folks with careers in parks and conservation, and people who collect data on behaviour and disturbance, engage with the public, and contribute to the conservation of an endangered species! You do not need to be an expert birder, but you do need to be willing to learn, spend long hours outdoors and get sandy!

There is no minimum time commitment to volunteer, and shifts are very flexible. We recommend a 2 hour shift weekly, but your schedule is entirely up to you! We offer community service hour sign-off for students, and if you reach 40 hours we can provide academic or employment reference letters.

Piping plovers are present in Ontario from late April until mid-late August. Volunteers will be contacted once nests are established, likely in mid-late May.

If you're interested in volunteering, please use the link below to sign up for our volunteer newsletter and select your local beach! We hope to see you at a training session this spring!
