Dear fellow Ontario Nature member,

Summer is just around the corner in Ontario, and there are so many ways to explore nature with family and friends. We’re heading into our busy season and have a lot on the go. Read on to see what we’re working on and how you can get involved!

Protect the places you love

Our planet is a shared home for humans and millions of other species. In recognizing our responsibility, we urge you to sign the Protected Places Declaration. In accordance with commitments made under the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, Canada has pledged to protect 17 percent of our lands and inland waters, and 10 percent of our coastal marine areas by 2020. Make your voice count by asking the governments of Ontario and Canada to meet their commitments.

A new look for Ontario Nature’s website

Over the past few months, we’ve been hard at work to create a new website designed to fit your needs. Our new website gives you more of the nature you love including stunning videos and images of Ontario’s wild species and spaces. We’ve also improved the navigation to help you easily find the information you’re looking for to stay informed about our programs, campaigns and the latest in conservation news. Connecting with nature, making a safe online donation or renewing your membership is simply a click away!

Developing young environmental leaders

Approximately 100 of Ontario’s environmentally-minded youth gather to attend Ontario Nature’s Youth Summit for Biodiversity each year. During this nature-filled weekend, students participate in outdoor activities, enjoy interactive workshops and learn the importance of connecting with other students who share a passion for environmental preservation. Hosted by Ontario Nature’s Youth Council, the ninth annual summit will be held at YMCA Geneva Park near Orillia September 21-23. If you are interested in supporting the Youth Summit and would like to sponsor a student to attend this unique event, please email Christine Ambre, Conservation and Education Coordinator at christinea@ontarionature.org.

Coming up: Our Special Spaces events

Join Ontario Nature’s Youth Council for the 2018 Our Special Spaces events! You can help create habitat for wild pollinator species through a series of planting events this spring in your community. Last year, thanks to hundreds of volunteers planted nearly 2,700 native wildflowers, shrubs and trees were planted to help create healthy homes for pollinators. Don’t forget to check back for more plantings as they’re added! You can also find other activities this summer on our Ontario Nature events calendar.

Remember to renew your Ontario Nature membership

By now you will have received, or will be receiving, information on how to renew your membership. By renewing your Ontario Nature membership, you are taking action for wild species and spaces in your backyard, our boreal forest and beyond. Every single victory we achieve for nature is only possible because of our caring and compassionate members like you. 2018 is a crucial year of action to protect nature, and we hope that you will continue to join us!

Get outside and report your sightings

It’s that time of year again when we start to see emerging turtles, salamanders, snakes and frogs! Learn more about these species and report your sightings with Ontario Nature’s Ontario Reptile and Amphibian Atlas. This citizen-science project helps to increase our knowledge base of these species, but we need your help! We’ve got a number of ways for you to report your sightings, as well as a comprehensive field guide to help you identify your sightings. By contributing sightings to the atlas, your data directly supports conservation initiatives across the province!

Petrel Point accessible boardwalk unveiling

Join us on Saturday May 26th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as we unveil our new 200-metre wheelchair-accessible boardwalk at Petrel Point Nature Reserve. Located on the southern Bruce Peninsula, the reserve is often referred to as ‘the garden of wildflowers’. But we’re not stopping there! We will be continuously working this summer to further extend the boardwalk so that everyone, regardless of abilities, will be able to enjoy this incredible property.
